Angelina Jolie HD Powder Mess

Here is a perfect case of HD powder being used incorrectly. There is a reason why I shy from using powder not only on clients but on myself. HD Powder is not made for flash photography (red carpets, brides, night events, stage performances, etc). Any kind of powder and especially a white silica based one, will reflect white if not blended properly on flash photography environments, that is exactly what is meant to happen in that level of lighting and strobes hitting your face/ body. When your foundation is applied and blended properly and the rest of the face can be set with a spray, your makeup is finished as far as I am concerned. Need a touch up? Use blotting paper gently in your oily areas, don’t over powder head to toe. HD powder is used mostly in film, in a controlled lighting environment. So, if you’ve read my comments regarding HD powder, now you know.

Setting powder is slightly different and a personal preference. The particles and ingredients of a setting powder (depends on brand) are not the same as HD powder but still can have the same effect in strong lighting, it must be used lightly and with a big brush not a puff, literally a dusting. Buffing with a Kabuki brush is your last step and must be done once the powder is applied. Also, having good lighting indoors helps or doing this in day light would be best. When I do makeup for clients, I use a set of lights called Glamcor which is basically day lights for indoor, poor lighting conditions. Once I started using these lights, everything changed. I hope this makes sense and answers some burning questions.

The worst part of this case with Angelina is that her makeup artist will take the rap, even if Miss Angelina retouched herself which could well be. FYI not saying don’t use powder or that it is bad, just be careful with its application and never do this when you are rushing. Of course I use pressed powder for film/ video mostly. Typically powder is handy on a set and often times on male grooming because it works well after long hours in front of an HD camera. That’s all :)
